Finding Help For Adults

Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol Services

 Visit Site
This web page aims to provide information to guide and assist you in finding out about specialist Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol services for people of all ages across the Murrumbidgee Local Health District.
Deciding on which type of help to look for and where to start will depend entirely on the needs of the person looking for help at that point in time.
This can be complex to navigate but starting with the GP is a good idea.Sometimes going back and trying another service if the first one does not fit is a good idea.
Deniliquin has a variety of programs to help people dealing with mental illness and those wanting to improve their mental health.

Starting the Process With Your GP

A good place to start the process of getting help is with your GP. GP’s are adequately and appropriately trained to diagnose and treat most mental illnesses, especially the high incidence, common disorders like depression and anxiety. They will refer you onto a psychiatrist, should it be needed. To access some counselling, a referral and a mental health care plan from the GP is usually needed to be able to access rebates from Medicare and medical aids. It is the GP’s prerogative/ assessment if they feel the person qualifies to access counselling through Medicare or MPHN Programs. The GP can listen , can diagnose and can medicate if needed and consider referral to appropriate counselling, specialist services and other supports.

This is a 24-hour mental health telephone access service. If in a life‑threatening situation please call 000 to receive immediate help.

Private Counselling

People can access private counselling through a psychologist, occupational therapist or social workers or a psychiatric nurse . No referral is necessary and people can simply call and make a booking. Fees can vary from practitioner to practitioner and patients should clarify costs and payments upfront. However , to claim any rebates the referral will have to be made through a GP and the process below will then apply.
